The Pine Hill Singers will present their annual spring concerts, “March of the Women!” on June 5th, 7th and 12th. This concert celebrates the many facets of strong women throughout history, and about the audacity and boldness of women speaking out loud. It’s about formidable women coming of age and dealing with old age; marching as suffragettes; and singing out against slavery, war and famine. It’s also about good (and not so good) ordinary women — housewives, lovers, daughters, sisters and grandmothers standing up for themselves, each other, and their families.
From Madrigals to pop tunes, these concerts include a moving collection of songs rejoicing in the feminine spirit. The varied program includes Sojourner Truth’s And Ain’t I a Woman, Dame Smyth’s The March of the Women, and Holly Near’s 1000 Grandmothers, – all inspirational songs from women’s rights leaders from the civil war to the 1970’s. You’ll hear songs about women surviving wars and starvation, and celebrating sisterhood; along with the humorous Sisters by Irving Berlin and the sultry Broadway songs You Don’t Own Me and Whatever Lola Wants.
“March of the Women!” will be presented on Friday, June 5th, at 7:00 pm at the Alumni Hall in Haverhill, NH and on Sunday, June 7th, at3:00 pm at the Littleton Opera House, Littleton, NH and on Friday, June 12th, at 7:00 pm at the Sugar Hill Meeting House in Sugar Hill, NH. The Pine Hill Singers are under the musical direction of Judy Abbott and Anita Bonnevie is their pianist. Admission for all concerts is by donation.
For more than 17 years, the Pine Hill Singers have brought outstanding performances to the local area. Their concerts include a large repertoire from classical to jazz, Broadway to patriotic, and serious to silly. The close knit choral singers from NH and VT meet weekly, and from this weekly sharing of music, they know the personal healing as well as the community outreach in the joy of music. Just after 9/11 the singers began to insert a quote on all their programs attributed to Leonard Bernstein – “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” Thus the Pine Hill Singers have established a fund for future musicians. They will be selecting their seventh award recipient in June 2015.
Come celebrate the many faces of the feminine spirit at our spring concert, “March of the Women!”
