Union Bank Offers Six Ways to Avoid Holiday Shopping Scams
In the wake of recent data breaches, shoppers should be on high alert while purchasing their presents this holiday season.
“While millions of credit and debit card transactions are conducted safely every day, it’s important that consumers are aware of the potential for holiday scams,” said David Silverman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank.
Union Bank offers the following tips to help consumers keep their information safe whether shopping in the store or online:
- Monitor your account. Use online and mobile banking to keep an eye on your transactions, especially during the holidays. If you don’t use these electronic tools, at least diligently review your bank statement. Either way, notify the bank right away if there’s any fraudulent activity.
- Beware of phishing scams. During the holidays, criminals will create a fake email for a deal that’s too good to be true. If you click on any links within the email, you may be downloading malware onto your computer or you may be asked for payment information that could lead to fraud.
- Limit large sums of cash. Even though we’ve seen financial crime migrate from physical to cyber, customers should be careful not to carry around large sums of cash when shopping. Credit & Debit card issuers will generally make you whole if there’s fraud against your account. If cash is stolen, your money is gone.
- Secure your internet connection. If shopping online, make sure you do so from a password protected Wi-Fi network. Never access online banking from a public Wi-Fi network.
- Shop safely. Before making an online purchase, make sure the website uses secure technology. When you are at the checkout screen, verify that the web address begins with https. Also, check to see if a tiny locked padlock symbol appears on the page.
- Read the site’s privacy policies. Though long and complex, privacy policies tell you how the site protects the personal information it collects. If you don’t see or understand a site’s privacy policy, consider doing business elsewhere.

The Gallery first opened its doors on November 20, 2004, with owner Jeff Wheeler and Co-Managers Beth Simon and Michele Allison, and staff member Jody Blaney. The festivities will include a double-toast to Beth Simon, who took over ownership of the Gallery this past April, and who was recently juried into the League as a craftsperson in metal jewelry.

Visitors and Community Enjoy 45th Annual Littleton Art Festival
Event chair, Meryl Nevins, with the 45th Annual Littleton Art Festival winner, Larrie Bradko
On September 27th, people from near and far gathered on Main Street for the 45th Annual Art Festival. Forty pop-up tents lined the street, representing over fifty of New England’s artists, coming from right down the road and as far as Rhode Island for the festivities. “The weather was beautiful, the art was gorgeous, and the people were charming,” smiled Littleton Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Lauren Anderson. “What more could we ask for?”
Guests to the festival had a chance to interact with a diverse group of artists, including photographers, illustrators, and sculptors. There were live demonstrations of pot throwing by potter Chuck Lovett of the Littleton Studio School and painters Larry Golden added to the brightness of the day with a rainbow of hues he applied paint to blank canvases, turning them into incredible works of art.
Musical art was in no short supply as “pop-up” pianists made special appearances at each of the vibrant pianos that make Littleton, Main Street their summer home. The day wouldn’t have been complete without the annual Lion’s Club Antique Car Parade, bringing just under 300 vehicles from across the ages to historic Littleton, entertaining young and old alike! The quilt show at the Littleton Opera House sold just under 500 tickets, and welcomed attendees to view both traditional and whimsical quilts. “We had a great time at the art show,” said artist Wayne Colpitts. “The 18 hour drive was worth every bit of it! [We] got to see lots of old friends and to see the transformation of Main Street. The town looks awesome! Great weather and great color!”
This year, the judges had an incredible challenge given to them. Judges Meryl Nevins fine art photographer and chair of the Art Festival Committee, Jason Tors, alternative artist and ownerof new gallery, The Loading Dock, and Sam Norrie who is an art lover and board member, evaluated each artist’s choice piece on criteria including interpretation, creativity, skill level, and presentation. In the end, Roger Irwin received an Honorable Mention for his unbelievable wild life photographs, third place to Brittany Rae McFlarland Bateman for her unique painting on skateboards, second place to Larry Golden for his paintings, and Larrie Bratko was the winner of the festival with his exquisite wooden bowls. This year’s “People’s Choice Artist,” who was chosen by festival spectators, was watercolor painter Irene Goodu.
The 2014 Poster Contest winner was Tianna Sparks of Littleton, NH who is currently a senior at Littleton High School. “This piece is unique and fun,” said Art Contest committee chair, Meryl Nevins. “It stood out to the committee because of its charm and youthfulness, as well as how well it met our theme of “seasons.” Those interested may buy a limited edition 2014 Art Festival poster at the Littleton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Ski Hearth Farm – America’s Newest Cross Country Ski Area Set to Open This Season
Ski Hearth Farm cross country ski area in historic Sugar Hill, NH is set to open for the 2014-15 season. Nestled in the hills of Franconia, NH adjacent to Cannon Mountain Ski Area and the imposing Lafayette Ridge of the White Mountains, the new area makes use of the historic buildings of what was New England ski area design pioneer Sel Hannah’s 640 acre farm.
Ski Hearth Farm has the advantage of being northern New Hampshire’s easiest accessed full service cross country ski area. It is located just 2 miles off Interstate 93 only 2 1/3 hours north of Boston, MA. Skiers won’t have much back road driving to access the miles of trails and first-class cross country skiing.
Twenty-three kilometers of trails for all abilities were designed by internationally renowned trail design firm Morton Trails. An additional 5 km of trails are designated specifically for snowshoeing. Starting in the low river valley fields and extending into the adjacent forested hills, the trail system has extraordinary views of the White Mountains. A specially designed teaching area directly accessed from the base area has been developed for people to learn the art of cross country skiing. An emphasis on grooming for skiing will be the hallmark of the facility so that skiers will find the best ski surface possible for both skate and classic ski techniques.
The new area is a vision of Davis Mangold, the owner of Ski Hearth Farm. The farm operates in the summer and fall to produce a wide variety of organic vegetables. Mangold is a 13 year veteran of the U.S. Navy and an enthusiastic cross country skier.
Nearly ¾ million dollars has been invested in the start-up including designing and building the trails, modifications to the base facility, ski rental fleet, grooming operations and equipment.
“This area is perfect for those wishing to try cross country skiing as well as experienced skiers out for a fun day of skiing. We have a friendly staff, a cozy base facility, brand new rental fleet and expert instruction. Skiers will find daily grooming on the trails with a perfect mix of terrain and distance,” said Mangold, “Easy access by car plus a full range lodging options for skiers and snowshoers as well as the historic nature of the farm and Sugar Hill make this a perfect location.”
Sugar Hill, NH is the site of the first organized ski school in the United States. In 1929 Austrian-born Sig Buchmayr set up shop on a hillside not far from Ski Hearth Farm. The school was the catalyst for the ski sport in America.
The farm has historic roots within the ski industry. Selden Hannah was a major influence on the development of the ski industry and founded Sno-Engineering. Sno-Engineering is now a world-wide leader in mountain resort industry. In 1939, the Hannah’s opened the farm for ski guests. Several items on the menu were raised on the farm and provided the guest a “local” meal.
“We want to continue that tradition of offering our skiers taking a break from the trails the opportunity to sample locally sourced foods and the products of our organic farm,” continued Mangold.
Ski Hearth Farm is partnering with local lodging establishments including the Sugar Hill Inn for Ski and Stay packages. The Sugar Hill Inn offers free ski or snowshoe tickets to those staying for two nights. Sugar Hill Inn is located only 1.5 miles from the ski center.
Ski Hearth Farm is scheduled to open for the season on December 26, 2014.
