Ride to the top of Mt. Washington on the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway! Choose to step aboard new eco-friendly biodiesel or historic coal-fired steam locomotives for a thrilling ride to New England’s highest peak. Trip includes time at the summit to enjoy a free visit to the Observatory Museum. An on-board Audio Tour provides a fascinating narrative. Marshfield Base Station features great views, museum with video presentation, restaurant & gift shop.
Open late April to early December. Up to seven locomotives can be in service at any time. Trains leave on the half-hour with 2–10 departures per day, depending on the season. The round trip takes approximately three hours, including a one-hour stop at the summit. We recommend that you bring a camera and extra jacket or sweater. Directions: From Boston, MA and Manchester, NH
Take I-93 North through Franconia Notch Parkway to Exit 35, Rt. 3N. Take Rt. 3N to Twin Mountain, then turn right into Rt. 302, follow to Bretton Woods. Turn left at Fabyan’s Station Restaurant onto Base Road, follow for six miles to the Cog Base Station.
From Portland, ME take Rt. 302W to Bretton Woods. Turn right at Fabyan’s Station onto Base Rd. and follow for six miles.
From New York, NY and Hartford, CT take I-95N to I-91N. Take I-93S, Exit 40. Follow Rt. 302 to Bretton Woods. Turn left at Fabyan’s Station onto Base Rd. and follow for six miles.
From Montreal, Quebec take Auto Route 10E to Auto Route 55S. Take Auto Route to I-91S. Take I-91S to I-93S, exit 40. Follow to Rt. 302E to Bretton Woods, NH. Turn left at Fabyan’s Station onto Base Rd. and follow for six miles.
